Saturday, Day 1

Things are going incredibly well.  We arrived at the Lutheran Guest house in El Salvador and met two wonderful sisters and their children.  Levi and Caedmon have taken to them and consequently we have babysitters.  Today we visited the Jesuit University.  Toward the end of the civil war here, 6 priests were killed (this was in the late 80´s.)  The university has set up a museum in their honor.  I got to see the clerical shirts with bullet holes, and vestments with blood on them.  It is odd to think that so recently people were killed for doing the work of Jesus and standing up for the poor and oppressed.  It is also fascinating to see the necessity for liberation theology in a cultural context in which it is so needed.  After going to the university we traveled by bus, which was a crazy experience in and of itself.  We then went to a church where Bishop Romero was killed while serving communion.  He was actually assasinated by the government.

  2. Awesome! I hope this is the first of many, many “life altering” and phenomenal experiences for you guys. God Bless.

  3. This blog is the best thing ever! Thanks Jessie and Jeremy for maintaining this despite a long day’s work. It is so wonderful to be able to follow your adventure this way. What a fantastic experience for you all. So, Widget is learning to pee outside in the bushes! This is a good skill for a young girl to acquire early on. She will be well prepared for her first backpacking trip.

If all goes as planned, we should be getting the new air conditioning unit installed today. Hooray! I told Gary Gilbride that unless I can walk in the front door and see my breath, I will consider the whole thing a failure.

Ben has confirmed that he is going to Texas with us in August. He will arrive a day or so after us and return the same day we do on August 9. It should be fun.

Back to work for me. Keep those posts and photos coming!

    Love,

    Papi
